Sanur or Kusamba?

For most passenger trips from Bali, the useful decision is Sanur to Banjar Nyuh or Kusamba to Sampalan. Other routes still exist, but these two solve the main location tradeoff.

Made Surya usually prefers Kusamba and Sampalan for routine local travel because the crossing is shorter and Gangga Express has often kept close to its planned departure. This is experience, not a guarantee. Weather, harbour operations, and safety decisions can change either route.

Harbours and pickup

Confirm the arrival harbour, hotel location, and return driver before arranging the transfer to your base.

Getting around the island

Compare a driver, a scooter, and a tour against your road confidence, group, luggage, and route.

Two-part checklist

Protect both sides of the crossing

Before boarding

  • Confirm operator, check-in desk, deadline, luggage rules, and the exact Penida harbour.
  • Review current operator messages and marine information.
  • Send the ticket details to the hotel, driver, or tour contact.

After landing

  • Meet the confirmed pickup before changing the sightseeing route.
  • Transfer to the base before treating arrival as a sightseeing day.
  • Begin the main route from the island on the next morning inside a 3D2N or longer stay.

Transport decisions

Questions to settle before payment

Should I choose the boat or hotel first? Answer

Shortlist them together. The arrival harbour changes the transfer to the hotel, and the hotel location changes which sailing and first-day route are practical.

Why do many Nusa Penida locals use Kusamba? Answer

The water crossing to Sampalan is shorter, and in Made Surya’s experience Gangga Express has usually operated close to its planned departure. That observation does not guarantee calm water or an on-time sailing.

Which route is better for Crystal Bay? Answer

Sanur to Banjar Nyuh usually reduces the Penida road transfer. Mahaloka Valley, our top all-round Crystal Bay hotel, is in the lower Crystal Bay area rather than up the surrounding hillside and was locally rechecked as about a 10-minute walk from the beach.

Can transport timing guarantee a full route? Answer

No. Harbour flow, sea conditions, road pace, queues, weather, and group energy can change the day. Decide which stop to remove first before departure.
