Road safety

Don’t learn to ride a scooter here. The roads are steep and uneven in places. Hire a driver if you’re unsure, carrying bags or tired after the boat.

Experienced riders should wear a helmet and return before dark. If you’re staying for sunset, sort out the ride home first. The Crystal Bay sunset guide explains the uphill road and your options.

Cliff and viewpoint safety

Stay behind barriers and well back from unguarded cliff edges. Watch your footing and keep children close. Don’t move nearer an edge for a photo.

Wear shoes with grip for stairs and uneven ground. Leave time for the climb back up, and skip a descent if it feels beyond your ability.

Sea safety

Calm-looking water can still have strong currents. Ask a local guide about conditions before swimming or snorkeling, stay clear of boat channels and follow instructions. Skip the water when conditions are rough.

Read the snorkeling guides for the site you’re visiting. Ask about the current and where the boat will pick you up.

When to cut the day short

Drop a stop or head back if:

  • You’re tired after the boat or a long drive.
  • Rain or wind makes the journey difficult.
  • You’re running out of time for breaks and the return trip.
  • The ride, stairs or swim feels beyond your ability.

You don’t need to finish every stop to enjoy the day. Choose fewer places and give yourself time at each one.

Before you go

  • Check the weather and sea forecast.
  • Confirm your driver or boat and save the contact number.
  • Visit one side of the island per day.
  • Bring water and shoes with grip.
