Made described his September 2026 sunset experience and confirmed the unlit uphill road on 6 October 2026. No exact field-visit date is recorded.
Why some visitors leave early
During an evening in September 2026, Made saw visitors leave Crystal Bay before sunset. Many were staying uphill and wanted to get back before dark.
Book a waiting driver or stay nearby so you can enjoy the changing sky without worrying about the road home.
Check sunset for your date
Sunset changes through the year. Check the Nusa Penida sunset calendar for your date and arrive 45 to 60 minutes early.
The colours can continue after the sun disappears, so leave time to enjoy them. Don’t use 6:30 pm as a fixed sunset time.
The uphill road after dark
If you leave Crystal Bay around 7 pm and ride a scooter back uphill, the road has no streetlights. That can be a dangerous ride, especially if you don’t know the road. For relaxed beach days and sunset evenings, stay in lower Crystal Bay, below the hill and within walking distance of the beach. Our top pick is Mahaloka Valley, about a 10-minute walk away.
Made confirmed the road conditions on 6 October 2026. If you’re staying farther away, arrange a driver to wait or ride back before dark.
Three ways to get home
Stay below the hill
Ask your hotel for the actual beach walking route. A listing that says Crystal Bay may still be uphill in Sakti. See where to stay.
Arrange a waiting driver
If you’re staying farther away, book pickup before going to the beach. Agree on the meeting point and keep the driver’s number handy.
Ride back before dark
If you’re using a scooter and don’t have another way home, leave while you still have daylight. A phone flashlight won’t make the uphill ride easier.
If you are riding a scooter
An unfamiliar, unlit uphill road is a difficult ride when you’re tired, especially with a passenger. Choose a driver for a sunset evening or return before dark.
Read getting around and the safety guide before choosing a scooter.
Stay for a few evenings
A 3D2N Crystal Bay stay gives you an arrival evening, one full day, and a departure morning. You don’t have to squeeze sunset between a long tour and a return boat.
Choose 4D3N if you want separate sightseeing and snorkeling days.
Before leaving for the beach
- Check sunset for your date and arrive 45 to 60 minutes early.
- Confirm your walk or book a waiting driver.
- Save the pickup point and driver’s number.
- Bring a charged phone and a light for walking.
- Ride back before dark if you’re using a scooter and have no other transport.
