Editorial Policy and Sources

People-first editorial standard

Every page should help a traveler make a clearer decision. We prioritize route fit, practical constraints, safety context, nearby alternatives, and the next useful planning step. Pages are not created simply to repeat a keyword or imitate search results.

Visit Penida is research-based. Unless a page explicitly identifies and dates a documented visit, readers should not interpret the wording as a claim that our editorial team personally inspected the place.

Source hierarchy

We choose sources according to the claim:

1. Government, port, immigration, weather, conservation, or other official sources for rules and public information.
2. Primary operator or business sources for their own location, facilities, policies, and current service.
3. Reputable geographic and travel references to cross-check access, orientation, and established place names.
4. Licensed photographs and their original metadata for visual identification and credits.

A source link does not mean every statement on a page came from that source. It identifies the most relevant reference for claims that need independent verification. When sources conflict, we prefer the source closest to the fact and state uncertainty instead of forcing precision.

Desk review versus field check

A “last verified” date means the cited sources and material claims were reviewed. A “field checked” date is shown only when a documented on-island check covered the relevant pin, access, facilities, or route. We do not convert desk research into a first-hand claim.

Priority routes are scheduled for a local monthly review covering travel-time ranges, final approaches, parking, toilets, shade, stairs, prices, crowd patterns, and material changes. Volatile content older than the freshness window is flagged during the site audit.

Hotels, restaurants, and tours

We do not fabricate ratings, reviews, prices, exact addresses, availability, opening hours, or amenities. Where those facts cannot be verified reliably, the page focuses on area fit and tells readers what to confirm directly.

Business pages may use licensed area, food, or atmosphere photography when authorized business media is unavailable. Those images are captioned as context and must not be interpreted as photographs of the named business. Mahaloka Valley media is drawn from an authorized local library and is used only in relevant property and Crystal Bay contexts.

Photography and licensing

Location photography is stored in a central registry with file path, dimensions, alt text, caption, creator, source URL, and license. We primarily use Wikimedia Commons and other sources with clear reuse terms. We do not scrape Google Maps, Booking.com, Instagram, or hotel websites.

Creators and license links are listed on the Photo Credits page. Cropping, responsive resizing, or format conversion may be applied for performance without changing the subject's meaning.

Recommendations, partnerships, and independence

A recommendation must include a user-oriented reason. Commercial relationships, hosted stays, affiliate links, or paid placements should be disclosed near the relevant content. Partnership interest does not buy factual claims or control of island-wide navigation.

At the time this policy was published, Visit Penida's planning pages are designed as editorial navigation. Readers should still verify a business directly before purchasing.

Corrections, review dates, and substantial changes

We update pages when an authoritative source changes, a material correction is reported, or a planning section no longer reflects the island. Minor copy edits may not change the review date. A “last verified” date is updated when the volatile claims and linked sources have been checked again.

To request a correction, use the contact page and include evidence. We assess the source, update the affected page, and avoid presenting a disputed detail as settled fact while review is ongoing.
