Quick answer

Choose your base by what you'll do in the evening

Stay near Crystal Bay if you want to walk to the beach for sunset. Choose Toyapakeh or Ped for a short transfer from Banjar Nyuh harbour and restaurants nearby. Choose Sampalan if your boat lands on the east side or Diamond Beach and Atuh are your main plan. Stay at least two nights so you get one full day without a boat.

How many nights, and whether to move

  • Two nights give you one full day without a boat. Your arrival and departure days go mostly on the crossing and transfers. The 3D2N itinerary shows how it fits.
  • Three or four nights let you give the west coast and the east coast a day each, plus a slower beach day.
  • Split your stay only with four nights or more: for example two nights near Crystal Bay or Toyapakeh and one or two on the east side. It saves driving about two hours each way to Diamond Beach, but every move costs half a morning.

What a room costs

A rough guide from booking sites in October 2026, per room per night:

  • Simple guesthouse: from about Rp250,000
  • Mid-range hotel with a pool: about Rp900,000 to Rp2,000,000
  • Private-pool or cliff villa: from about Rp3,000,000

Prices change by date, so check yours before booking. For a budget room close to Crystal Bay, see Nyuh Kadah Guest House in Sakti.

Stay examples

Stays to consider

Each profile says where the hotel is, how far the beach or harbour is and who it suits. Check the exact pin before you book.

Check these before you book

  • The exact pin and the walk. A hotel listed under Crystal Bay may be uphill in Sakti. Check the actual walk to the beach or restaurants on the map.
  • The road home after dark. The uphill road above Crystal Bay has no streetlights, and there's no ride-hailing app on the island. Walk back from a nearby hotel or book a driver.
  • Harbour pickup and luggage. Ask whether the hotel collects you from your harbour. Hard suitcases don't travel well on a scooter.
  • Cash. ATMs are in the north-coast towns, not near every hotel. Bring rupiah before the boat; our ATM and payments guide explains cards and fees.

Plan the transfers with the room

  • Most Sanur boats land at Banjar Nyuh, between Toyapakeh and Ped. The Sanur boat guide lists every company's times and harbour.
  • For your last morning, leave your hotel at least two hours before the boat. East-coast hotels need an earlier start; see east hotel transfers.
  • Book sightseeing as separate west and east days with a driver. The day trip guide shows what fits in one day.

Choosing a base

Where to stay: common questions

Where should first-time visitors stay in Nusa Penida? Answer

Stay near Crystal Bay if you want beach mornings and sunset within walking distance. Choose Toyapakeh or Ped if a short transfer from Banjar Nyuh harbour and restaurants nearby matter more. Both suit a west-coast sightseeing day.

How many nights do I need? Answer

At least two. Two nights give you one full day without a boat. With four nights or more, you can give the west and east coasts a day each and still have a slow beach day.

Should I stay near Diamond Beach? Answer

Only if the east coast is your main plan. It saves a long drive to Diamond Beach and Atuh, but there are fewer restaurants in the evening, some cliff hotels sit on steep access roads, and the west coast is about two hours away.

How much does a hotel in Nusa Penida cost? Answer

As a rough guide from booking sites in October 2026: simple guesthouses from about Rp250,000 a night, mid-range hotels with a pool about Rp900,000 to Rp2,000,000, and private-pool cliff villas from about Rp3,000,000. Prices change with the date and season.

Which harbour should my boat use? Answer

Most Sanur fast boats land at Banjar Nyuh, between Toyapakeh and Ped, which suits Toyapakeh, Ped and Crystal Bay. If you stay in Sampalan or on the east side, compare boats to Sampalan or the Kusamba crossing.

Can I get around without a scooter? Answer

Yes, with a driver. There is no ride-hailing app on the island, so ask your hotel to arrange a driver or book one before you arrive, especially for evenings out.
