Quick answer

Yes, if you choose one coast

Take a 07:30 or 08:00 boat from Sanur, see three or four places on one coast and catch the 16:00 or 17:00 boat back. Choose the west coast if your boat lands at Banjar Nyuh. Budget about Rp100,000 per foreign adult for the island levy and site tickets on top of the boat and driver. Leave the east coast, snorkeling and sunset for a longer stay.

A realistic day, hour by hour

This is how a west-coast day works with a 17:00 boat back. Times are approximate; your ticket shows the real check-in time.

TimeWhat happens
Early morningLeave your Bali hotel for Sanur. Allow for south Bali traffic and the check-in time on your ticket.
07:30 or 08:00Fast boat from Sanur. Operators list 30 to 45 minutes at sea.
About 08:30 to 09:00Land at Banjar Nyuh, pay the island levy if you haven’t already, and meet your driver.
09:00 to 15:00Three or four west-coast stops and lunch. Allow 45 to 70 min for the first drive to Kelingking.
By 15:00Leave the last stop. We use the same rule as for hotel pickups: set off at least two hours before your boat.
17:00Boat back to Sanur, then the drive to your hotel. On a 16:00 boat, leave the last stop by 14:00.

What the day costs in fees

Since 1 September 2026, Nusa Penida charges a ticket at each major site on top of the arrival levy. For one foreign adult on a west-coast day:

  • Arrival levy: Rp25,000
  • Kelingking: Rp25,000
  • Broken Beach with Angel’s Billabong (one row in the official tariff): Rp25,000
  • Crystal Bay: Rp25,000

That’s about Rp100,000 per adult. Children aged 4 to 13 pay Rp15,000 per fee, and Indonesian visitors pay the site tickets but not the arrival levy. Bali’s separate Rp150,000 tourist levy is paid once per trip to Bali. Keep small cash for parking. Our levy and attraction fee guide has the details.

What tours usually include

  • Usually included: the return fast boat, a car and driver on the island, and often lunch and water.
  • Often extra: hotel pickup in Bali, the island levy and site tickets, paid swings and photo platforms, snorkel gear and tips.
  • Ask in writing whether the new site tickets are included. Many tour listings were written before September 2026.
  • Shared or private: a shared tour costs less per person; a private car lets you change the order of stops and leave a busy place early.

How the day works

  1. Get to Sanur early. Add the drive from your Bali hotel and check-in before the sailing.
  2. Cross to Nusa Penida. Operators list 30 to 45 minutes at sea; rough water takes longer. The Sanur boat guide has every company’s times and harbour.
  3. Meet your driver at the harbour. Send the ticket ahead so they wait at the harbour your boat uses.
  4. Visit a few stops on one coast. Leave time for parking, short walks and lunch.
  5. Head back for check-in. Agree with the driver when to leave the last stop. If the boat or road runs late, drop a stop.

What won’t fit in one day

  • Both coasts. Allow 100 to 150 min just to drive from Kelingking to Diamond Beach.
  • The Kelingking beach stairs plus other stops. The descent is steep and the climb back is tiring. Enjoy the viewpoint instead on a day trip.
  • Snorkeling plus a full land tour. Combined tours exist, but they cut the land part to two or three stops and make a long day.
  • Sunset. It rarely fits before a same-day boat back to Bali.

West or east for one day

We recommend the west for a day trip. It’s closer to Banjar Nyuh, the main stops are near each other, and you can enjoy Kelingking without the stairs.

Avoid the usual day-trip problems

  • Crowds at Kelingking. Most tours from Bali reach the viewpoint mid-morning. With a private driver, ask whether starting at Broken Beach and Angel’s Billabong gets you to Kelingking at a quieter time.
  • Road works. About 2 km of the Telaga to Klumpu road towards Kelingking and Crystal Bay has been resurfaced since July 2026, and the Sampalan to Toyapakeh road is under repair. Expect slow sections and keep the two-hour buffer before your boat.
  • Ticket queues. Park first, then buy the site ticket at the counter. The system is cashless, so have a card ready and keep small cash for parking.
  • A choppy crossing. If you get seasick, take your usual remedy before boarding. A rough sea can also delay the boat back, so don’t plan a tight evening connection in Bali.
  • Trying to do too much. Three or four stops on one coast is a full day. Enjoy Kelingking from the top rather than adding the beach path.

Book a driver before you cross

A driver makes the narrow, hilly roads easier on a short visit, and you won’t lose time finding transport at the harbour. If you’d like Made to arrange it, see the West Coast & Crystal Bay Tour or the West Coast Icons Tour. Confirm harbour pickup and your return check-in time with Made before paying.

Day trip questions

Can you do a Nusa Penida day trip from Bali? Answer

Yes. Take a morning boat from Sanur, visit three or four places on one coast and catch a 16:00 or 17:00 boat back. You’ll have about six hours on the island, including driving.

What time is the last boat back to Sanur? Answer

The last fast boats leave Nusa Penida at 17:00, and several companies also sail around 16:00. Check the time on your ticket and the harbour it leaves from.

How much are the fees on a day trip? Answer

A foreign adult pays Rp25,000 on arrival plus Rp25,000 at each ticketed site. A west-coast day with Kelingking, Broken Beach with Angel’s Billabong, and Crystal Bay comes to about Rp100,000 per adult, on top of the boat and driver. Children aged 4 to 13 pay Rp15,000 per fee.

Should I choose the west or east coast for a day trip? Answer

Choose the west. It’s a shorter drive from Banjar Nyuh, and Kelingking, Broken Beach and Angel’s Billabong are close together. Keep the east coast for a longer stay.

Can I see both coasts in one day? Answer

Not comfortably. We plan on 100 to 150 minutes just to drive from Kelingking to Diamond Beach, so you’d spend most of your short day in the car.

Can I add snorkeling to a day trip? Answer

Only with fewer land stops. Combined tours put a snorkel trip first and then two or three west-coast stops, so the day is long. If seeing mantas matters most, make snorkeling the main plan.

Can I stay for sunset and still get back to Bali? Answer

Usually not. Sunset comes after the last boat back to Bali. Stay a night if you’d like sunset at Crystal Bay.

Should I book a driver before I cross? Answer

Yes. Send your driver the boat ticket, the arrival harbour and your return boat time, so they meet you at the right place and know when to head back.
