Why stay here
Toyapakeh is the harbour village on Nusa Penida’s northwest tip, looking across a narrow strait to Nusa Lembongan. Most Sanur fast boats land next door at Banjar Nyuh, so your first transfer can take minutes instead of a drive across the island. Snorkeling boats, dive boats and small boats to Lembongan leave from Toyapakeh’s own beach.
Choose it for an easy arrival, an early snorkeling start or a night before a morning boat back to Bali. It’s the island’s only Muslim fishing village, with a mosque, according to both Nusapenida.org and Travelfish. Expect a working harbour, with boats coming and going through the day.
Which harbour you’ll use
Nusapenida.org’s boat guide lists Angel Billabong, Maruti Express, Semabu Hills, Axe Stone and other Sanur boats arriving at Banjar Nyuh. Kusamba boats such as Gangga Express land at Sampalan, about 8 km east along the coast road. Some companies moor at Buyuk, next to Sampalan.
Check the arrival pin on your ticket before you book a Toyapakeh hotel. If your boat lands at Sampalan, a hotel in Sampalan or Ped is closer. The harbour guide explains each landing point.
Food, cash and everyday needs
Travelfish describes restaurants and local shops within walking distance, and Nusapenida.org mentions a few small warungs next to the beach. For a wider choice of dinner spots, the road east into Ped has more.
OpenStreetMap shows a BRI ATM near Banjar Nyuh harbour, and Mandiri, BNI and BPD Bali ATMs beside the Pertamina station and Kayun Supermarket on the main road. There are minimarts, a pharmacy and a small public health post, Puskesmas Pembantu Toyapakeh, on Jalan Raya Toyapakeh. A Puskesmas mapped as open 24 hours is in Sampalan, about 8 km east. Bring rupiah from Bali anyway; the cash and ATM guide explains why.
Beach evenings and snorkeling
Toyapakeh’s small beach is mostly used by boats, though some people sunbathe there. In the evening the sun goes down behind the mangroves of Nusa Lembongan, and on clear days you can see Mount Agung on Bali.
Don’t swim out from the beach. Bali’s zoning plan for the marine protected area calls the currents in the Toyapakeh strait very strong, and the strait is the steepest water around the island. Snorkel Toyapakeh Wall only on a guided boat trip: you’ll usually drift along the reef and the boat collects you farther on. Check the BMKG harbour forecast and ask the guide about the current before you get in.
Staying here makes an early snorkeling trip easy, because many boats leave from this beach. Confirm the meeting point anyway; a manta trip may leave from somewhere else, and sightings are never guaranteed.
Getting to the sights
You can walk around the harbour and village, but you’ll need a driver or scooter for everything else. Passport and Stamps, updated in March 2026, puts Toyapakeh and Ped about 30 to 40 minutes from the west-coast sights and over an hour from the east coast. Our Kelingking guide allows 45 to 70 minutes from Banjar Nyuh harbour.
The road here is busy at boat times. In 2022 detikBali reported a narrow access road with regular jams at Banjar Nyuh port around 9 to 10 am. Klungkung started work on the 8 km Sampalan to Toyapakeh road in May 2026 under a 240-day contract, so leave extra time heading east. A driver who knows the current road is easier than a scooter.
From 4 to 7 October 2026, Made Surya reported long fuel queues at Banjar Nyuh and Ped that slowed the coast road. Read the dated fuel-queue report for that period; we haven’t confirmed conditions since.
Where to stay
Agung View Villa sits above Toyapakeh village, with a garden, a small pool and a private pier. Its website says the harbour is about five minutes away by boat. Ask about the uphill approach and room steps.
Sea La Vie Resort overlooks Toyapakeh harbour, with an infinity pool and a restaurant. Its website gives a 15 to 20 minute drive from the harbour, so book its transfer rather than planning to walk.
Toyapakeh, Crystal Bay or Sampalan?
- Toyapakeh: the shortest transfer from Sanur boats, snorkeling departures and cash nearby.
- Crystal Bay: a swimming beach for sunset evenings. Our pick, Mahaloka Valley, is below the hill, about a 10-minute walk from the beach, so you avoid the unlit uphill road after dark. Independent recommendation; no commercial relationship.
- Sampalan: Kusamba arrivals, a market and a 24-hour Puskesmas, and a shorter drive to Goa Giri Putri.
Choose a hotel and book pickup
Send your hotel the boat company, sailing time and arrival harbour, and agree where you’ll meet. For one full sightseeing day, follow the 3D2N itinerary. If you’d rather not drive, a tour with a driver handles the roads for you.
