Why stay here
Sampalan is Nusa Penida’s main town and the seat of the district government, on the north coast inside Batununggul village. Its harbour takes the short crossing from Kusamba in east Bali, and the town has a daily market, banks and a Puskesmas, the public health centre. If your boat lands here, a hotel in town is a short ride away and arrival day stays easy.
It’s a working town rather than a beach resort. Travelfish calls it one of the island’s largest towns, with several restaurants aimed at visitors and stays spread along the nearby coastal villages for a couple of kilometres.
Who it suits
- Kusamba or Padang Bai arrivals. A Sampalan hotel avoids crossing the north coast with your luggage.
- Travellers who like a real town. You can walk to the market, a pharmacy or a bank instead of relying on a hotel shop.
- East-side sightseeing. Goa Giri Putri, the cave temple in Suana, is about 15 minutes by road from Sampalan according to our Goa Giri Putri guide.
Choose somewhere else if you’re arriving on a Sanur boat at Banjar Nyuh (stay in Toyapakeh), if you want beach sunsets (stay near Crystal Bay), or if you want to wake up near Diamond Beach.
Sampalan and Buyuk harbours
Nusapenida.org’s September 2026 boat guide lists Gangga Express, The Angkal and Sekarjaya from Kusamba to Sampalan, Idola Express from Sanur, and the car ferry from Padang Bai, which takes about 90 minutes. Buyuk, just west of town, is a separate landing point used by only some boat companies. Most other Sanur boats go to Banjar Nyuh, about 8 km west.
Send your ticket and the exact arrival pin to your hotel or driver. The Kusamba crossing guide covers check-in, and the harbour guide shows how the landing points differ.
Food, market and health care
OpenStreetMap places most of the town’s services within a short walk of each other on the main road east of the harbour:
- Market: the town market sits near the harbour road. Frommer’s describes it as a morning market, open from about 5 to 10 am, with fruit and vegetables, some brought over from Bali.
- Banks and ATMs: a BRI branch, a BNI ATM and several other machines.
- Health care: Puskesmas Nusa Penida, mapped as open 24 hours, with several pharmacies nearby.
- Shops: supermarkets and minimarts in town, and another minimart near Buyuk.
Travelfish mentions several restaurants for visitors. Ask your hotel which ones you can walk to, especially in the evening. Bring rupiah from Bali in case an ATM is out of service; see the cash and ATM guide.
The seafront is mainly a harbour and boat beach. Bali’s zoning plan describes the seabed between Kutampi Kaler and Sampalan as the steepest on the north coast, so don’t swim out. For snorkeling, book a guided boat trip and confirm where it picks you up; many leave from Toyapakeh, at the island’s northwest tip.
Getting to the sights
You’ll need a driver or a scooter for the sights. Kelingking and Crystal Bay are on the far west side, so a west-coast day is longer from here than from Toyapakeh. Klungkung began improving the 8 km Sampalan to Toyapakeh road in May 2026 under a 240-day contract, so allow extra time while the work continues.
The east coast is closer, but Diamond Beach and Atuh still need a drive and time for their stairs. We haven’t found a reliable drive time from Sampalan, so ask your driver when you book.
From 4 to 7 October 2026, Made Surya reported fuel queues at the Pertamina in Ped and at Banjar Nyuh. A transfer from this side to a Banjar Nyuh boat could meet both. Read the dated fuel-queue report for that period; we haven’t confirmed conditions since.
Where to stay
Daphila Cottage is on the coast just west of Buyuk, in Kutampi Kaler. Its booking page lists sea-view rooms, a pool, a restaurant, car hire and tour help. Confirm pickup from the harbour on your ticket.
Many listings say Sampalan, Batununggul, Buyuk or Kutampi Kaler for places a few kilometres apart. Open the map pin and check how far you’d walk to the market or a restaurant.
Sampalan, Toyapakeh or Crystal Bay?
- Sampalan: Kusamba arrivals, town services and a shorter drive to Goa Giri Putri.
- Toyapakeh: Sanur boats at Banjar Nyuh and snorkeling departures from the beach.
- Crystal Bay: a beach for swimming and sunset. Stay below the hill so you can walk back instead of riding the unlit uphill road after dark.
For a quieter base on the east-coast road, compare Batununggul.
Arrange arrival pickup
Choose your hotel, then send it the boat company, sailing time and arrival harbour. For separate west, east and snorkeling days, the 5D4N plan gives each its own day.
