When to leave for your boat

Fast boats to Nusa Penida leave from Sanur Harbour, on the east coast of south Bali. These are the times we recommend leaving your hotel. They include being at the harbour 45 to 60 minutes before departure.

Maruti’s check-in opens 90 minutes before departure and closes 30 minutes before, and some companies ask you to swap your voucher at their office first. Check your own ticket for the counter and deadline.

Canggu’s narrow roads take the longest

Most Canggu streets are two narrow lanes, and the shortcuts through Berawa and Umalas fill up quickly. A travel blog estimates 50 to 75 minutes to Sanur at midday and up to about 2 hours at peak times. That’s why we suggest leaving Canggu earlier than Seminyak, even though it isn’t much farther on the map.

Badung is building a 4.7 km road linking Canggu, Berawa, Umalas and Seminyak to Jalan Teuku Umar Barat, with a target of the end of December 2026 (ANTARA, August 2026). Until it opens, early mornings are the quietest time to cross.

From Seminyak, Kuta or Legian

Seminyak, Kuta and Legian are closer to Sunset Road, the main road east. A travel blog estimates 30 to 45 minutes early in the morning. Side streets can still be slow to leave, so be ready at the gate when your driver arrives.

The route: Sunset Road and the Bypass

Drivers usually follow Sunset Road to the big Simpang Dewa Ruci roundabout near Kuta, then take Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai east and north to Sanur. There’s no toll on this route. The Bali Mandara toll road heads south to the airport and Nusa Dua instead.

Getting a ride to Sanur

  • Book a driver the day before. For an early boat, a driver who waits at your gate is the easiest choice. Agree the pickup time and drop-off at Sanur Harbour.
  • Ask about a boat company pickup. El Rey’s free pickup covers one address in Seminyak or Kuta and Legian, but not Canggu. Other companies may charge extra outside their area.
  • Book the boat and pickup together. If you book your fast boat ticket with Visit Penida, we can add a pickup from your hotel in Bali. Ask Made about your area and any extra cost before you pay. See the fast boat tickets.
  • Using Grab or Gojek: app pickups are reported to be restricted on parts of Canggu, such as Jalan Batu Bolong and Berawa. If an app ride can’t reach your villa, walk to a main road or minimarket to meet the car.

At Sanur Harbour

The last stretch is the Bypass through Sanur. Cars reach the harbour through one entrance on Jalan Pantai Matahari Terbit, and it gets busy before the morning boats. Give your driver the boat company’s name so they can drop you near the right counter.

See the Sanur boat times for each company’s departures and which harbour on Nusa Penida your boat uses.

Day trip or overnight

From Canggu, a day trip means leaving before 06:00 for an early boat and driving back in the evening rush. We recommend staying at least two nights on Nusa Penida so you have one full day on the island.

Coming back from Nusa Penida

The last boats to Sanur leave Nusa Penida at 17:00, so you’ll drive back in the evening traffic. The same blog estimates 75 to 100 minutes from Sanur to Seminyak between 16:00 and 19:00, and Canggu can take longer.

Book your ride back before you cross. App drivers are reported not to be able to collect passengers inside Sanur Harbour, so a pre-booked driver saves you walking out to the main road with your bags.
