Getting to the Gilis takes much longer than crossing between Bali and Penida. A ticket may include stops or a change of boat.
Ask for the Penida departure pin, boat name, stops and arrival time. Specify Gili Trawangan, Gili Air or Gili Meno rather than just “the Gilis”. Save the answers and operator contact.
Questions to ask the operator
- Will I stay on the same boat or change boats?
- Are there stops in Bali or Lombok?
- Do I collect my bags at a transfer?
- Where do I board, and when does check-in close?
- Which Gili island do I arrive at?
- Can I bring a suitcase, surfboard or dive gear?
- What happens if the boat is delayed or cancelled?
Prepare for a longer crossing
Check the BMKG marine forecast and operator messages before leaving. Bring water, sun protection and a light layer. If you get seasick, prepare before boarding.
Keep your phone, documents and medicine in a waterproof bag you can reach. Follow the crew’s boarding instructions. Ask about steps, beach landings and assistance if you need help walking.
Leave a night before a flight
Don’t book a flight for the same day as this crossing. Weather, loading and extra stops can delay arrival.
Stay a night in Bali or Lombok before flying. Check whether your hotel booking can move if the boat is cancelled.
Get to the right Penida terminal
Arrange a driver and confirm the departure pin the evening before. Your boat may leave from a different harbour than the one you arrived at.
See the harbour guide, weather advice and packing list. For time on Penida before the Gilis, try the 5D4N itinerary.
