Made confirmed the beach and traffic advice on 4 October and the unlit Crystal Bay road on 6 October 2026. Government safety and marine sources are listed below. Ask locally before swimming.
Relaxing or sightseeing?
For a day on the sand, we’d choose Crystal Bay. For dramatic cliffs and the famous staircase, choose Diamond Beach. They’re different outings, so choose the one you actually want.
Diamond Beach: stairs and waves
You can enjoy the view without taking the stairs. Going down means steep steps and a tiring climb back, with little shade.
Diamond faces open-ocean swell. A larger set of waves can reach sand that looked dry a moment ago. Watch the sea while resting or taking photos, and don’t treat the rocks offshore as protection for swimming.
Crystal Bay: an easier beach day
Crystal Bay has easier shore access and local vendors renting snorkeling gear. You can have a slow morning, break for lunch, and return for sunset.
Currents, swell, tides, and boat activity still affect the water. Ask locally before swimming or snorkeling, and stay away from the channel and moving boats.
At a glance
Stay close for sunset
If you leave Crystal Bay around 7 pm and ride a scooter back uphill, the road has no streetlights. That can be a dangerous ride, especially if you don’t know the road. For relaxed beach days and sunset evenings, stay in lower Crystal Bay, below the hill and within walking distance of the beach. Our top pick is Mahaloka Valley, about a 10-minute walk away.
Made confirmed the road conditions on 6 October 2026. If you’re staying farther away, arrange a driver to wait or ride back before dark.
Book a driver for Diamond on a separate day. Guests at Mahaloka can arrange it through the Travel Hub.
Allow for the drive
Don’t combine Diamond with a full west-coast tour. Have lunch, leave time for the stairs, and return without rushing.
Traffic advice for 4 to 7 October 2026: Made reported two separate fuel queues: one near Banjar Nyuh and another near the Pertamina station in Ped. Both can delay trips along the north-coast road. For a quiet stay away from these queues, choose Sakti or Crystal Bay and take the inland road for an east day. If you have a boat ticket, leave your accommodation at least two hours before the ticketed departure, or earlier from the east side. Leave time for check-in. Traffic conditions after 7 October 2026 are not confirmed by this report.
Read the dated traffic report and the east-hotel transfer guide before booking during that period.

Confirmed on 4 October 2026 long Pertamina queues in Banjar Nyuh and Ped and the Sakti/Crystal Bay recommendation for a quieter stay with easier driver arrangements during the 4 to 7 October advisory. For a boat back to Bali from Banjar Nyuh, leave accommodation at least two hours before the ticketed departure; the driver may need an earlier start. The report does not establish conditions after 7 October.
