Orient yourself

Get to know the areas

Locate the arrival corridors and west-side beach area before planning the road journey.

Area comparison

How the areas connect

Compare harbour convenience, everyday services, and west-side beach access; the roads between them matter more than straight-line distance.

Area

Toyapakeh

A northwest harbour corridor with nearby dining, west-side road connections, and access to many snorkeling departures.

Route context

  • Arrival through the northwest harbour corridor
  • Road connections toward west-side stops
  • Nearby dining and snorkeling meeting points

What to know

More practical than atmospheric. It is usually not the area to choose if a beach-and-sunset overnight matters more than arrival-day ease.

Area

Sampalan

The northeast service corridor around Sampalan and nearby Buyuk connects harbour arrivals with shops and everyday island services.

Route context

  • Harbour arrivals around Sampalan and Buyuk
  • Shops and everyday services on the northeast coast
  • Confirm the onward road journey separately from the crossing

What to know

Useful, but not the most scenic base for a short overnight. If the trip is built around west-side beach time, it may feel too functional.

Area

Crystal Bay

A west-coast beach area reached beyond the northwest harbour corridor, with a slower evening rhythm and less immediate harbour access.

Route context

  • Beach access and west-side route connections
  • Extra road travel from the harbour
  • Evening beach time when the return journey allows it

What to know

Less efficient for tight arrival-and-departure logistics. It usually works best once you already know the trip can support a west-side overnight.

Read the coast as a route

Use the island map to locate your harbour and stops. Ped and Batununggul add north-coast context; a north-coast arrival is not the same as already being at the east-coast viewpoints.

Choose accommodation next

Compare areas and hotels in Stay. Check the exact access road against your crossing and transfer, the 3D2N recommendation, and seasonal conditions.

Area planning

Questions that usually decide the right base

Which area is easiest for most first-time visitors? Answer

Toyapakeh is usually the easiest first answer because it keeps harbor arrivals, west-side planning, and a lot of food and tour logistics in a simpler part of the island.

When does Sampalan make more sense than Toyapakeh? Answer

Sampalan becomes more useful when you arrive on the east side, want a more service-led local base, or prefer to keep east-side arrival and departure logistics more straightforward.

When is Crystal Bay worth the extra effort? Answer

Crystal Bay is worth comparing when you already know you want a proper overnight with beach access and west-side sunset pacing, rather than the simplest possible arrival-day base.

What should I open after this page? Answer

Use the map to connect your harbour and route, then open Stay to compare areas and accommodation for your trip length.
