Choose another date for your day trip
Avoid a Nusa Penida day trip on 9 October 2026. A Ngaben ceremony is planned in the Banjar Nyuh area, with a main-road closure that affects the approach towards Maruti.
Even with a morning closure window, traffic can back up into the evening. A same-day trip gives you little room to recover lost sightseeing time or reach your return boat. Don’t assume an arrival after 10:30 will solve the problem.
Choose another date if you haven’t booked. If you’re already on the island, keep that day’s plans flexible and arrange your transport ahead.
What the village letter says
The letter comes from Desa Adat Nyuh Kukuh, in Desa Ped, Nusa Penida, Klungkung, Bali. It is dated 6 October 2026, numbered 04/DANK/X/2026, and addressed to the Nusa Penida police chief. Its subject is permission for a road closure.
It gives these details:
- Ceremony: Pitra Yadnya (Ngaben), described in the letter as dadakan.
- Date: 9 October 2026.
- Road section: the main road from in front of Pertamina Banjar Nyuh to the junction towards Maruti.
- Planned closure: 06:00 to 10:30 WITA, local Bali time (UTC+8).
- Police assistance: a request for personnel at the location to help the ceremony run smoothly.
The letter bears the village stamp and the signatures of I Wayan Lugra, the Bendesa Adat (customary village head), and I Komang Morda, the Penyarikan (village secretary). Copies are addressed to the subdistrict head, transport and port authorities, and the local military command.

A morning closure doesn’t mean clear roads at 10:30
10:30 WITA is the end of the closure window given in the letter. It isn’t a promise that the ceremony has finished or that every vehicle can move normally at that time.
Visit Penida’s local travel warning is that congestion can continue into the evening. That’s why we advise against a day trip for the whole date, rather than suggesting you arrive just after the morning closure.
The document is the village’s request and notice of its plans. It doesn’t include a separate police approval or a confirmed diversion route.
What Pitra Yadnya and Ngaben mean
Pitra Yadnya refers to Hindu rites that honour the deceased and ancestors. Ngaben is a cremation ceremony within that tradition. In Balinese Hindu belief, it helps release the atma, or soul, from the body and supports its spiritual journey. Indonesia’s Ministry of Religious Affairs explains this meaning.
For the families involved, this is an important religious ceremony. Give participants space, keep the road clear, and follow directions from village stewards and police if they are present. Ask before taking close photographs of mourners or rituals.
If you already have tickets or a hotel booking
Contact your boat provider and driver before travel day. Ask which harbour your ticket uses, whether your pickup crosses the affected road section, and what changes they can arrange.
For a return boat on 9 October, leave sightseeing off your departure plan. Agree an earlier pickup with your driver based on the actual route and the operator’s check-in deadline. A normal journey estimate may be too short when traffic is backed up.
If moving your trip is possible, ask about the booking’s actual rescheduling terms. The letter doesn’t cancel boats or close the whole island. See our Nusa Penida harbour guide before assuming another boat uses the same terminal.
An overnight trip gives you more time on the island, but arrival and departure transfers still need planning around the affected road.
This advisory is for 9 October 2026
The letter was dated 6 October and reviewed for this article on 8 October 2026. This advisory concerns 9 October 2026. It doesn’t confirm traffic on later dates or extend the separate 4 to 7 October fuel-queue report.
Check the latest arrangements with your driver and boat provider before setting out.
